BULLYING

Phoebe Prince, Tyler Clementi. You may not know who they are but enter it in your search engine and  well, you wouldn't exactly be happy. They were two teenagers. Teenagers grow up to be adults. Did they? No they didn't. In fact they didn't even grew up and are both now dead. It comes as a pretty shocking fact, to be able to kill someone at such a young age. Even surprising is that they were able to kill themselves. Two teens going to school and living in a college dorm respectively, both from families who loved them and both having not really any thing wrong with them. But the reason that they are dead, they just didn't fit in with the rest of the popular kids at school. The first one was a popular girl who was strong enough to accept her mistake and ask for forgiveness and the other one a guy who is not here just because of the narrow mindedness of his roommate. they have a similarity though, both of them were bullied.

All the above are reasons for which you can be bullied. Keeping with accordance to the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, which i have now on my table, bullying means to frighten or hurt a weaker person.
Its been observed that in the States, 32% of children report bullying and 4% of the teenagers have dared to come out to report cyber bully.
Bullying has been classified into two forms.
  • Direct bullying  - which involves physical aggression
  • Indirect bullying - which refers the the victim being socially isolated from the rest.
Bullying though has come into highlight only in the 2000's. The first ever National Bullying Prevention Week was observed in 2000 in Canada.
Since then, its been almost a decade and a half and in the least we have laws being made against it.
But why are people bullied?
It's been noted that the abuser feels empowered by dominating others. These others, cited victims are targets of bullying. It has been observed that at the hard end, the victims posses poor social problem solving skills. The abusers are also psychologically strong and maintain high social standards whereas the victims are emotionally distressed and socially marginalized.
The contexts in which bullying harms the youth are : Cyber bullying, Disability bullying, Gay bullying and Sexual bullying.
Every year, there are about 15- 30 cases of suicides among teens due to bullying. Surprisingly, this context has its own page at Wikipedia titled Bullycide.
